Joan Heartfield, Ph.D., is the author of Romancing The Beloved, A Sacred Sexual Adventure into Love. She has been counseling and teaching for over 25 years, specializing in couples counseling, compassionate communication, heart intelligence, holotropic breathwork, voice dialogue, sacred sexuality and stress management. She has a strong background in dance and drama therapy.
Dr. Heartfield earned her B.A. at Mills College; an M.A. in Dance, Drama and Theater from the University of Hawaii; an M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Antioch College; and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the Professional School of Psychological Studies.
Dr. Heartfield has a private practice in Maui, Hawaii where she lives and works with her husband, Tomas Heartfield. With him she has taught workshops around the world.
In addition to her traditional studies, Dr. Heartfield received a Holotropic Breathwork certification after studying with Stan Grof for 3 years. She spent time with Swami Muktananda and spiritual teacher Hana Veary studying meditation. She has been practicing yoga and tai chi ch’uan for the past 30 years. She has studied tantra with many well-known teachers, including Charles and Caroline Muir.
Dr. Heartfield has taken many groups to the Amazon to study with shamans, and to study medicinal plants.
